Pence booed, heckled, called ‘traitor’ by some conservative conference attendees

Some of former President Donald Trump’s supporters clearly remain displeased with former Vice President Mike Pence for not having done more to oppose or reject the certification of President Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory on Jan. 6.

That was evident on Friday when Pence was loudly booed, heckled, and called a “traitor” while delivering a speech at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Orlando, Florida, The Washington Times reported.

Heckled and booed

The former vice president did receive some supportive cheers from the crowd of social conservatives and Evangelical Christians as he kicked off his speech at the conference.

However, mixed in with the cheers were plenty of boos, as well as some unintelligible, shouted heckles that — at certain points — sounded like the word “traitor.”

Anger stems from Jan. 6 certification

USA Today reported that according to various journalists covering the event, some of those who heckled and shouted at Pence were escorted out or decided to willingly leave as the former vice president carried on with his speech.

At issue is the belief among some of Trump’s supporters that Pence, as president of the Senate, had the opportunity but failed to halt the congressional certification of President Biden’s electoral victory.

It is thought that Pence could have refused to accept the certified election results of certain states where the legitimacy of those results had been questioned due to allegations of fraud and irregularities in both the election itself as well as the ballot counting process.

Further, the theory goes, had Pence rejected the results from those certain states, more audits and recounts would have been launched that, some believe, would have fully exposed the alleged, widespread fraud and led to a complete reversal of the results, ultimately resulting in Trump winning a second term.

The fact that Pence had declined to do so, despite strong encouragement from Trump and some of his supporters and the House Republicans who had formally objected to the election results, caused great consternation among some and led to where we are today.

Could he have done anything differently?

Many argue that the former vice president’s role overseeing the congressional certification of the 2020 election results was merely ceremonial and claim that he had no authority — or any legitimate reason — to do anything other than rubber-stamp Congress’ acceptance of the state-certified results.

Regardless, it is painfully apparent that hard feelings remain in relation to the events that transpired in the aftermath of the election and on Jan. 6, and if those raw emotions and feelings of betrayal persist among Trump’s large, loyal base, Pence may find that his political career has drawn to a conclusion.
