House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is facing criticism for her response to a reporter’s question on the topic of abortion.
According to The Daily Wire, Pelosi was pressed during her weekly press conference Thursday to give her take on a Mississippi law that bans most abortions after 15 weeks gestation. The measure is set to come before the U.S. Supreme Court later this year.
Instead of answering directly, however, the House speaker deflected, saying she supports the precedent set by Roe v. Wade and insisting that since she’s “a mother of five,” she’s better versed to speak on the issue than most.
“A woman’s right to choose”
According to The Daily Wire, Pelosi was asked Thursday: “The Supreme Court this fall will review a Mississippi law that bans most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Is an unborn baby at 15 weeks a human being?”
The speaker’s response made clear that she remains strictly pro-choice, even as “a mother of five.” Notably, she didn’t mention the case out of Mississippi, however.
“Let me just say that I’m a big supporter of Roe v. Wade,” Pelosi said, as The Daily Wire reported. “I’m a mother of five children in six years. I think I have some standing on this issue as to respecting a woman’s right to choose.”

“I have great standing”
Like President Joe Biden, Pelosi has taken a lot of flak over the years for stances on topics like abortion that don’t seem to align with her self-proclaimed Catholic faith. Despite the pressure, however, she won’t seem to divulge whether she feels that unborn babies are humans, too.
In 2015, when asked if unborn babies were human at 20 weeks gestation, Pelosi again demurred. “You know what, what we’re talking about on the floor of the House is something that says politicians should determine what affects the health of a woman, her life, her health, and the rest,” the speaker said, according to The Daily Wire. “I don’t think it’s up to politicians to do that.”
Pressed further, Pelosi said “it isn’t an ideological fight, it’s a personal health issue.”
“As a mother of five in six years,” she claimed, “I have great standing on this issue, great understanding of it, more than my colleagues.” Whatever you say, Nancy.
