Pelosi cites ‘standing’ of her own motherhood status to speak on abortion

There is a strange duality embraced by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), in that she is a staunch, pro-abortion advocate, yet also proclaims herself to be a devout Catholic — even though the Catholic Church expressly forbids abortion and deems it to be a grave and mortal sin.

Even stranger is Pelosi’s habit of citing her own status as a mother as giving her greater “standing” on the issue of abortion than others, a nonsensical non-sequitur that she uses to dodge uncomfortable questions regarding the topic of the killing of unborn human babies, The Daily Wire reported.

Pelosi’s motherhood grants “standing”

During her weekly press conference on Thursday, Speaker Pelosi was asked by a CNS News reporter about an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case involving a Mississippi law that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks and whether she, herself, believed, “Is an unborn baby at 15 weeks a human being?”

“Let me just say that I am a big supporter of Roe v. Wade,” Pelosi replied. “I am a mother of five children in six years. I think I have some standing on this issue as to respecting a woman’s right to choose.”

The CNS journalist attempted to ask a follow-up question but was flatly ignored as Pelosi quickly called on another reporter.

Not the first time

This wasn’t the first time that Speaker Pelosi has cited her motherhood status as somehow granting her more “standing” than others to espouse a position on the issue of abortion, as CNS News reported that in the past, its journalists pressed Pelosi a similar question concerning a 20 week abortion ban, and received a similar response in Jan. 2015.

After refusing to answer whether an unborn baby at 20 weeks was a human being, Pelosi said at the time, “And as a mother of five, in six years, I have great standing on this issue, great understanding of it, more than my colleagues.”

She even proceeded to proclaim as “true” the criticism she had received from some colleagues that she believed “she knows more about having babies than the pope.”

Abortion and the Holy Communion

Meanwhile, it appears that this dichotomy staked out by Pelosi — professing to be a devout Catholic but also fervently supporting abortion — has grown increasingly untenable for her and other allegedly devout Catholic politicians, such as President Joe Biden, the Catholic News Agency reported in May.

The U.S. bishops conference (USCCB) is reportedly close to issuing a strong statement regarding professed Catholic politicians who nevertheless advocate for and support abortion and how they should be denied Holy Communion for their embrace of a “grave sin” expressly prohibited by church Canon and doctrine.

Pelosi and others like her have taken heart with the appearance that top Vatican officials have supposedly tried to dissuade the bishops from issuing the statement or at least water it down to render it irrelevant, but there are no guarantees that the bishops will listen, and Pelosi’s ironic and cognitively dissonant dance around the subject of abortion and catholicism may soon come to an end.
