New poll spells trouble for Democrats, especially on the immigration crisis

A survey of likely voters released earlier this week revealed that more than half of respondents blame President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the growing immigration crisis at the southern U.S. border, according to the Washington Examiner. 

The survey of 1,200 likely voters was sponsored by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) and the Republican Governors Association (RGA). The organizations took the temperature of Republican, Democratic, and independent voters around the country, and the results do not look good for Biden, Harris, and Democrats in general.

Immigration crisis a top issue

On immigration crisis, 56% agreed that Biden is to blame for the increase in illegal immigration. That number included 93% of Republicans, 16% of Democrats, and 60% of independents.

When asked if they believe Harris has been effective in her leadership role in responding to the immigration crisis, only 31% of respondents felt that she was “effective” or “very effective” on the issue. Not surprisingly, a slight majority of respondents, at 51%, feel as though Harris is “not effective at all” on the immigration crisis.

Fifty-three percent of those who were surveyed agreed they would be less likely to vote for Democratic candidates in 2022 as a result of the out-of-control border crisis.

Various other issues

The survey also touched on a variety of other political issues currently facing the nation. For example, more than half of those surveyed, at 51%, agreed when posed with the statement: “The increase in inflation is due to Biden’s economic policies.”

On the same topic, broken down by party line, 86% of Republicans agreed, along with 12% of Democrats, and 52% of independents.

The poll also asked the respondents about their feelings on Biden’s response to recent cyber-attacks, which virtually crippled several major American industries, which are thought to have originated in Russia. Fifty-seven percent viewed the president’s response to the attacks as “too weak.”

The “honeymoon’s over”

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), chairman of the NRSC, which helped conduct the poll, made clear during a phone conference earlier in the week that the results show that Americans are grossly disappointed with the Biden administration’s lack of progress on the border crisis issue.

“I think it’s clear that Biden’s honeymoon’s over,” Scott said. “It was pretty short on immigration. I think the president and Harris had just made a terrible mess of the border. And as much as a lot of people think the media is trying to help them, the public is clearly aware this is a complete failure.”

Republicans are widely expected to use Biden and Harris’ collective failures on the border crisis as ammunition against Democratic candidates in the 2022 midterm elections. They’ll also dial in on hot-button topics like critical race theory, which continues to stir enormous controversy around the country.

The poll conducted by the NRSC and RGA is only one of many that will be used to determine where Americans stand on such issues, and it’s not a stretch to presume that Democratic candidates are not exactly thrilled with what the poll data continues to reveal.
