NBA’s Knicks will require fans to be vaccinated

Unvaccinated fans of the New York Knicks have just been cut off.

Breitbart reports that, if the Knicks advance in the NBA playoffs, then the organization has decided that it will not allow unvaccinated individuals to attend games at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

“Exclusive” tickets

The Knicks organization revealed its decision in a statement that it released on Friday.

“Given the enthusiastic response to vaccination requirements, the team also announced that, should they advance past round one, tickets will be sold exclusively to fully-vaccinated individuals,” the press release reads.

The statement suggests that motivating this decision was the fact that fans responded well, even “enthusiatic[ally],” to vaccination requirements that the organization imposed on fans during earlier playoff games. According to the Knicks, more than 90 percent of those in attendance during the first round of the playoffs were vaccinated.

Entry requirements

What this all means, according to the Knicks, is that “for entry [to a game at Madison Square Garden], all fans must present valid proof of either full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 antigen or PCR test, along with an appropriate ID matching their documentation.”

The “proof” is provided by an app that fans are required to download on their phones. After downloading this app, users are then required to upload the relevant information, such as vaccination information, and then, they will either be cleared or not cleared by the Knicks to attend a game in person.

Madison Square Garden Sports executive vice president David Hopkinson praising the Knicks latest announcement.

“The energy our Knicks fans have brought to the playoffs has been incredible, proving there’s nothing more exciting than Knicks basketball at the Garden,” he said. “It’s moments like this that show us what’s possible if everyone gets vaccinated — we’ll all be able to get back to doing what we love — and that definitely includes being together to cheer on the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.”

Background

This all comes after an incident at Madison Square Garden last week when a fan was ejected – and later banned – after spitting at an Atlanta Hawks player.

There does not appear to be any relationship between this incident and the Knick’s latest decision to mandate vaccinations.

Rather, it appears that many entities are moving in the direction of requiring proof of vaccination from the public. The Knicks are just one of the organizations that have actually now gone ahead and taken that step.
