Massive group of GOP lawmakers demand Biden remove Harris from immigration role

Vice President Kamala Harris was tasked earlier this year with investigating the “root causes” of the spike in northward migration from Central America’s “northern triangle” countries — a task on which she has yet to make any meaningful progress.

According to Fox News, her gross lack of progress is not going unnoticed on Capitol Hill, as a group of 56 House Republicans, led by Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI), signed a letter urging President Joe Biden to take Harris off of the immigration task force, given her lackluster performance and seeming unwillingness to visit the southern U.S. border.

Grotham posted an image of the signed letter in a Thursday tweet, adding that the number of illegal immigrants surging across the border is “unacceptable.”

The heat is on

Harris, who was mostly ridiculed for her recent trip to Guatemala and Mexico, where she failed to make any noticeable improvements in the immigration crisis, has faced increased scrutiny from Republicans and some of the mainstream media for seemingly dropping the ball on perhaps the most important task she’ll face as vice president.

Grotham and his 55 GOP colleagues in the lower chamber made clear that her lack of progress is unacceptable, dialing in on her refusal to get a first-hand look at the situation by taking a few hours to visit the southern U.S. border.

“Despite being in the midst of a border crisis this country has not seen in two decades, Vice President Harris has not yet shown adequate interest in observing this crisis first-hand,” Grotham and his colleagues wrote.

“In the 85 days since the Vice President has been tasked with solving this crisis, she has yet to visit the border and meet with Border Patrol agents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and local law enforcement officials,” they added.

It’s not just Central America

While the White House has worked overtime to insist that the bulk of the illegal immigration problem is a result of migration from Central American countries, the lawmakers who signed the letter to Biden pointed out that it’s not just the “northern triangle” that America needs to worry about, adding that there has been a spike in illegal crossings by a number of people from different countries.

“The exclusive focus on Central American countries ignores the fact that we see many migrants attempting to illegally cross our southern border from countries all over the world, including Russia, Brazil, Cuba and Haiti,” the Republicans wrote.

In the letter’s conclusion, they made a direct appeal to Biden, suggesting that it’s impossible for him to be pleased with Harris’ action on the issue so far, before urging the president to drop her from the role altogether.

Politics aside, it’s perfectly clear at this point that Harris is not cut out for such a monumentally important task, and Biden should absolutely consider replacing her with someone who can make the moves to get the job done.
