Liberal ‘The View’ co-host says family members buying guns because of white supremacy

Sunny Hostin, a black liberal co-host of ABC’s daytime talk show “The View,” said on Wednesday’s broadcast that she has a number of family members who have recently bought guns and engaged in firearms training because of the threat of white supremacy.

“A lot of my friends and family members have begun to purchase guns, they’ve begun gun training and, I think, a lot of it has to do with the increase in violence against Black people,” Hostin said.

“If you listen to the FBI statistics, we had FBI Director [Christopher] Wray testify that the greatest threat in the United States is White supremacy,” Hostin continued. “And who are the victims of White supremacy? Generally they are African Americans so I really believe that that is why you are seeing African Americans now buying guns … the Second Amendment is for everyone.”

Hostin’s perspective is presumably shared by many in the African-American community, even as homicides in major cities have skyrocketed in the last year.

Shootings rise

In Chicago alone last weekend, there were 54 people shot and eight killed, and in North Carolina, people celebrating Juneteenth blocked an ambulance from getting to the hospital after someone was shot there.

Officials like Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot want to blame lawful gun ownership for the violence, but the majority of the shootings come from illegal guns in the hands of criminals.

All the gun control laws in the world aren’t going to fix the gun violence problems in cities, because those target law-abiding gun owners. And in this era of defunding police, the option of ramping up enforcement may not be available, either.

Biden is trying to help with the problem, although his solution may not be favored by police defunders.

Biden suggests spending COVID dollars on law enforcement

In a speech on Wednesday, Biden explained that up to $350 billion of his $1.9 trillion COVID relief package could be spent by cities to hire law enforcement officers, pay overtime, prosecute gun traffickers and invest in technology to make law enforcement more efficient.

He said his administration is planning new steps to take down rogue gun dealers and stop illegal gun trafficking across state lines.

If these efforts are successful, they could help Chicago’s illegal gun problems and reduce violence there much more effectively than going after legal gun owners with more restrictions.

While shootings and gun homicides have increased since the beginning of 2020, they are still at lower levels on average than they were in the 1970s and 80s, Reuters reported.
