House Republicans introduce resolution to censure Biden over border crisis

President Joe Biden has faced persistent criticism from conservatives over his administration’s perceived failure to address an immigration crisis along the nation’s southern border.

Now, a group of Republican lawmakers led by U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) has introduced a resolution to censure the president.

“Lying to the American people”

In a statement, Boebert explained that the goal of her proposal is to hold Biden “accountable for his actions — or lack thereof — at the border.”

Backed by more than 20 House Republicans, the resolution was presented on Wednesday and addressed several key complaints about the administration’s border policy.

“Biden has refused to enforce the laws securing our border, he has refused to visit our border, his border czar [Vice President] Kamala [Harris] has refused to visit the border, and his Secretary of Homeland Security is lying to the American people by saying that our border is closed,” the Colorado Republican added.

In a statement of his own, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) defended the censure bill, adding: “President Biden and Vice President Harris have sent an unequivocal message that they prefer illegal immigrants over Americans. Their radical agenda has erased our southern border.”

For his part, Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL) insisted that border security is “one of the most fundamental duties of a president,” but Biden has deferred to his progressive base instead of upholding the rule of law.

“We got to do something”

“His reckless determination to reverse every Trump administration policy regardless of the outcome has put every American family and our economy at risk,” Moore said. “We must hold President Biden to account for putting politics over the people he has sworn an oath to protect.”

The resolution itself cited some startling statistics, including the record-breaking number of undocumented immigrants encountered by border agents last month.

“Under President Trump, there were 1,400 children in [Health and Human Services] custody at the border,” the bill states. “When Rep. Boebert visited in June, there were 22,000.”

After months of criticism for her reluctance to do so, Harris confirmed this week that she is planning to visit the U.S.-Mexico border — one day before former President Donald Trump is set to join a group of GOP leaders on the border. For Trump and other Republicans, the timing of the trip seems suspicious.

“Suddenly President Trump is going to the border and they realized, ‘Oh crap, we got to do something,'” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said during a recent Fox News Channel appearance.
