Granddaughter of singer Nina Simone drags Kamala Harris in series of tweets

Vice President Kamala Harris has received widespread acclaim from many in the entertainment industry — but the family of one legendary musician is now leveling some serious allegations against her.

Fox News reported over the weekend that the granddaughter of singer Nina Simone had taken to Twitter with accusations that Harris has been wresting away control of her late grandmother’s estate.

“Nina’s granddaughter here,” ReAnna Simone Kelly declared in the first of a series of tweets on Saturday. “My family doesn’t run her estate anymore.”

“Our family name was DRAGGED”

Kelly went on to say the estate “was taken away from us [and] given to white people.”

“Our family name was DRAGGED in the media. We get NO royalties, nothing. Wanna hold someone accountable? Ask Kamala Harris why she came for my family,” she wrote in one tweet, according to Fox.

“As I said before, Ask her why she separated my family,” Kelly added of Harris. “Ask her why my grandmother[‘]s estate is in SHAMBLES now. Ask her why we as her family no longer own the rights to anything. Ask her why she bullied my mother in court and my mom almost killed herself from the depression.”

A shoddy settlement?

In its report, Fox cited a 2016 settlement agreement regarding the Nina Simone Charitable Trust. The document reportedly makes multiple references to Harris, who was at the time serving as California’s attorney general.

“The Attorney General asserts that [Lisa Simone] Kelly breached her fiduciary duty to the Estate and to the Charitable Trust and wrongfully diverted Estate assets,” the settlement states, according to Fox.

It goes on:

The Attorney General seeks to surcharge Kelly for amounts totaling $5,937,749.42 plus over $2.5 million in interest, which the Attorney General contends is far more than one-half of the Estate’s value during [Lisa Simone] Kelly’s administration of the Estate.

Adding insult to injury

Writing in another tweet Saturday, Kelly alleged that her mother had been subjected to “a lot of slander” amid the controversy before raising criticisms about the decision by the Biden transition team to play a song by her grandmother at Harris’ inauguration.

“OH WAIT, While we’re asking Kamala questions ask her why after all of this pain and suffering she put us through a Nina Simone song was sang at the inauguration to swear her in as VP?! She knew what she was doing,” Kelly complained, as Fox reported.

The remark apparently came in reference to singer John Legend’s rendition of Nina Simone’s song “Feeling Good,” performed at an inauguration event in January.
