Gavin Newsom assaulted by ‘aggressive’ homeless man with water bottle

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) was reportedly assaulted on Thursday by an “aggressive homeless man” whose weapon of choice was a “water bottle,” according to the Daily Mail

Troopers with the California Highway Patrol quickly intervened and arrested the 54-year-old man before removing him from the scene.

Gov. Newsom was apparently not injured during the bizarre incident, and continued on with his visit to two businesses in Old Oakland in an effort to promote small businesses in the state, according to the report.

Newsom’s not having a great year

The Daily Mail report noted the homeless man’s sister was later interviewed and claimed her brother was stricken with serious mental health problems, along with being homeless. She called his aggressive actions “consistent with his past behavior.

The unidentified man’s bond has been set at $35,000 and he faces charges of suspicion of resisting an executive officer and assaulting a public official.

The reported assault took place as Newsom faces several other battles in the Golden State. The recent heatwave has led to growing concerns about vulnerabilities with regard to the state’s power grid, with outages a serious concern for many of the state’s residents.

In addition, the embattled governor faces a pending recall vote following a massive, influential movement of California residents calling for his removal due to his controversial handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ending pandemic restrictions

Newsom has recently pushed ahead with several seemingly bold moves to reopen the state’s economy in what many see as his way of pushing back against the mounting pressure to oust him from the governor’s mansion. The state was virtually fully reopened on June 15.

According to a recent press release from the governor’s office, “Effective June 15, restrictions such as physical distancing, capacity limits and the county tier system will end.”

“California is turning the page on this pandemic, thanks to swift action by the state and the work of Californians who followed public health guidelines and got vaccinated to protect themselves and their communities,” the governor said.

With nearly 40 million vaccines administered and among the lowest case rates in the nation, we are lifting the orders that impact Californians on a day-to-day basis while remaining vigilant to protect public health and safety as the pandemic persists,” Newsom added.

The pandemic restrictions put in place by the governor — for what many believe was far too long — might have ended, but the damage to Newsom’s political career might be too great to overcome. Republicans are already working overtime to promote their own candidate in an attempt to turn the Golden State red in the upcoming recall election, according to KUSI News.
