President Joe Biden spent considerable time promoting a goal that by July 4, 70% of Americans would have at least one COVID-19 vaccination.
According to the Washington Examiner, that doesn’t appear to have much of a chance of happening, and the White House seems to be well aware, as they’ve subtly shifted their messaging to refocus on targeting young, unvaccinated adults and promoting the possible deadly emergence of what’s known as the “Delta” variant of the virus, thought to be more aggressive than the original virus.
White House downplays failure
White House officials told the Washington Examiner that Biden was aware that his goal of getting 70% of all American adults vaccinated with at least one shot was lofty, seemingly dialing back on their previous confidence that it was at least possible.
The White House source doubled down in Biden’s defense, saying “it’s not like we would have stopped telling people to get vaccinated on July 5.”
The Biden administration’s COVID-19 coordinator, Jeff Zients, is expected to spin the situation on Tuesday during the White House COVID-19 press briefing, instead focusing on the vaccination successes that the Biden administration has accomplished so far.
“We have built an unparalleled, first-of-its-kind, nationwide vaccination program. And as a result, we have successfully executed the most complex, logistical task in history — administering 300 million shots in 150 days,” Zients will reportedly tell the press, according to NBC News.
Going further, Zients is also expected to admit that while they’ll likely fall short of their July 4 goal for all American adults, the administration has hit the goal when broken down into age groups, such as hitting the 70% goal among adults age 30 and over.
What’s their explanation?
Zients is also expected to touch on why the administration believes that young adults are not meeting the marks they set out months ago for vaccination rates, along with touting the fact that most of the country has returned to some sense of post-pandemic normalcy.
“The reality is, many younger Americans have felt like Covid-19 is not something that impacts them and have been less eager to get the shot,” the advance remarks obtained by NBC News revealed.
“What really matters is what the country feels like and what Americans are safely able to do. Restaurants and schools have been able to reopen. There will be celebrations that are very different than what we talked about even a few weeks ago.” Zients will reportedly say.
The Biden administration now believes that the 70% overall vaccination mark will be met sometime by mid-July, even though vaccination rates continue to plummet across the country, even as states offer lotteries and other incentives to get shots in arms.
Let’s be clear: If it wasn’t for former President Donald Trump’s monumental efforts in successfully executing “Operation Warp Speed” last year, Biden would be nowhere close to meeting such goals, but don’t expect Zients or anyone else in the White House to admit it.
