Chicago mayor faces increased criticism as 28 people are shot over holiday weekend

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) faces increased criticism as the city reels from 28 people shot over Memorial Day weekend, including two deaths adding to the city’s already violent year of crime.

“This is our city that we love, and there is loss of life, and it should make us weep and roll up our sleeves,” said John Fuder of Chicagoland United in Prayer, ABC-7 reported.

The Chicago Sun Times reported the shootings took place despite changes to increase safety. “The Chicago Police Department canceled days off and put officers on 12-hour shifts while community groups fanned out across the city to draw people out of the line of fire,” according to the Sun Times.

The outlet also reported, “Shootings are up 36% this year compared to the same period in 2020.”

What’s next for Chicago?

According to local Chicago CBS outlet WBBM-TV, a 12-year-old boy was among those who was shot, “when someone in a black Dodge Charger fired shots and grazed his leg. He was taken to the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’ Hospital in good condition, and police believe he might not have been the intended target.”

As the city braces for more violent crime during the summer months, Lightfoot continues to face attacks for her handling of the situation.

In May, the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the city’s largest police union, issued a vote of “no-confidence” against Lightfoot, according to The Daily Wire.

The mayor dismissed the vote, saying, “Frankly, getting a vote of no confidence from that guy is a badge of honor accepted” — a reference to FOP President John Catanzara.

Lightfoot’s excuses

“We’ve got monumental reforms and accountability in the supervisors’ contracts. The state law has changes to make sure that there’s more reform and accountability, but what does the FOP president say?” Lightfoot continued.

“He says that his strategy is to do nothing, to drag it out, so that he doesn’t have to face the reality,” she said, according to The Daily Wire.

The facts don’t help Lightfoot, however, as shooting statistics continue to climb. The prior weekend saw 48 shot, including 10 fatally, across Chicago.

The people of Chicago are fed up with the violence, as is the rest of America. Lightfoot needs to do more than respond to criticism. She needs drastic improvement in order to save more lives across her city.
