In a revealing new interview, former Attorney General William Barr referred to former President Donald Trump’s claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election as “bull****.”
The interview was conducted by ABC News’s Johnathan Karl. It was for a book that Karl is currently working on called “Betrayal,” which is set to be released in November.
On Sunday, The Atlantic published the interview that Karl did with Barr in a piece called “Inside William Barr’s Breakup With Trump.” There, Barr took Karl through his handling of Trump’s election fraud claims.
“It was all bull****”
Towards the end of 2020, Barr, when he was still the U.S. attorney general, authorized the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate what he referred to as “substantial allegations” of voting irregularities in the 2020 presidential election. Barr revealed to Karl, however, that when he authorized that investigation he had “already concluded that it was highly unlikely that evidence existed that would tip the scales in the election.”
Barr explained to Karl that his “attitude” was that “it was put-up or shut-up time.”Barr said: “If there was evidence of fraud, I had no motive to suppress it. But my suspicion all the way along was that there was nothing there. It was all bull****.”
Barr’s DOJ concluded that investigation in December, saying, “To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have affected a different outcome in the election.”
“A clown show”
In the interview, Barr went on to recount an exchange that occurred between him and Trump after Barr made this announcement.
According to Barr, at one point, Trump had confronted him over it. And, Barr revealed to Karl what he told Trump in response.
“You know, you only have five weeks, Mr. President, after an election to make legal challenges,” Barr said. “This would have taken a crackerjack team with a really coherent and disciplined strategy. Instead, you have a clown show. No self-respecting lawyer is going anywhere near it. It’s just a joke. That’s why you are where you are.”
Trump responds
Trump, on Sunday, issued a response calling Barr “a disappointment in every sense of the word.”
“RINO former Attorney General Bill Barr failed to investigate election fraud, and really let down the American people,” Trump said.
“Bill Barr’s weakness helped facilitate the cover-up of the Crime of the Century, the Rigged 2020 Presidential Election!” he added.
