If Vice President Kamala Harris was expecting a warm reception at the U.S.–Mexico border on Friday, she was likely left sorely disappointed.
The Daily Wire reports that Harris was greeted in El Paso, Texas, last week by a barrage of protesters on both sides of the immigration debate, many of whom didn’t hold back from throwing criticism at the vice president over the Biden administration’s handling of an ongoing crisis at the border, where migrants have flooded into the country in record numbers in recent months.
“Que Mala Harris”
Reports from the Daily Wire and Newsweek described protesters outside an airport in El Paso, some wielding signs that excoriated Harris and White House’s response — or lack thereof — to the border crisis.
“Kamala do you hear their screams?” one sign read, reportedly in reference to migrant children being held by the Biden administration at nearby detention facilities.
Another read “Que Mala Harris,” a play on the Spanish words “que mala,” meaning “how mean,” according to Newsweek.
“A little too late”
But it wasn’t just strongly worded signs that put a damper on Harris’ arrival in Texas. The vice president was also forced to contend with heavy flak from protesters who were fed up with how long it took her to make the trip.
Breitbart reports that Harris first visited the border a full 93 days after President Joe Biden tasked her with handling his administration’s diplomatic response to the crisis.
“You came a little too late,” one demonstrator shouted, according to The Daily Wire.
“We have had this crisis for years,” the protester added. “We need solutions. We don’t need you parading in the Border Patrol station, or acting like you care. Americans matter. America matters.”
“Where the height of the problem isn’t”
Harris was joined on her trip by Biden Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, “as well as a couple of Democratic lawmakers,” Newsweek reported. The VP visited a border processing facility as well as a housing facility maintained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
But many critics argue that the trip was nothing more than a publicity stunt, pointing to the fact that by only visiting El Paso, Harris avoided the worst of the crisis.
“She’s going where the height of the problem isn’t,” GOP Sen. Ted Cruz said ahead of the VP’s trip, according to Fox News. The Texas lawmaker went on:
The post ‘A little too late’: Harris greeted by angry protesters in El Paso first appeared on Conservative Institute.Kamala, you need to go to McAllen. Kamala, you need to go to the Donna tent facility, which is the tent city your administration has built that is massively overcapacity, that has kids in cages. […] You need to look at the children in cages that you and Joe Biden put there in a way that is endangering their safety and subjecting them to abuse and sexual assault.
