For months, President Joe Biden attempted to downplay worries about the ongoing immigration crisis at the southern U.S. border, even as a massive influx of illegal migrants continued to pour across the border. While Biden insists that the situation is not a crisis, his administration’s latest actions seem to clearly suggest otherwise.
That was proven recently, as the Washington Examiner reported that some 500 personnel from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have been dispatched to lend assistance, tasked with the duties of helping process the influx of unaccompanied illegal minors.
USDA babysitters?
A USDA spokesperson confirmed the bizarre move in an email, which explained that USDA employees are being recruited to help deal with the record-setting number of illegal immigrant minors that continue to come across the southern U.S. border.
“The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is partnering with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to support the federal government’s urgent efforts to care for and place Unaccompanied Children who have entered the U.S. via the southern border,” the email message reportedly read.
“HHS is seeking interested candidates to serve from two weeks up to 120 days for a voluntary deployment detail as part of the effort,” the email added.
A “call to service”
According to a report from Spectator, the strategy comes in the wake of an internal email sent from acting USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Chief Terry Cosby.
“These are children in need and government employees now have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these children, families and communities impacted by this migration,” he wrote.
Crosby went on to advise USDA employees that they should “seriously consider answering this call to service to make a difference.”
No training required
Another HHS document was quoted as saying that those who volunteer “should not expect formal, classroom-based training classes up front as the need for help is immediate.”
This is despite the fact that UDSA workers will likely be interviewing illegal immigrant children who have experienced “gang violence, sexual abuse, domestic violence, physical abuse, being separated for a long time from parents, and witnessing the death or suffering of people they love.”
The primary task of the incoming USDA volunteers will be to assist HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is responsible for detaining unaccompanied minors for a period of one month while American-based family members are sourced.
The Washington Examiner noted that involving the USDA is “extremely unusual” as the department “has no role in immigration or border affairs.”
