‘The action picks up at night’: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott gives Fox’s Bartiromo tour of US-Mexico border
Sunday Morning Futures anchor Maria Bartiromo recently left the Fox News studio and headed to McAllen, Texas, where Republican Gov. Greg Abbott gave her a tour of the U.S.–Mexico border.
What she saw didn’t exactly inspire optimism among Americans who are concerned about a surge in migration that many say amounts to an all-out crisis, even if the Biden administration doesn’t want to admit it.
“The action picks up at night”
According to a transcript from Fox, Bartiromo said Sunday that “162,000 people were apprehended in the month of April, after 172,000 in the month of March.” They’re staggering numbers, especially coming out of four years under President Donald Trump.
It’s a fact Gov. Abbott didn’t shy away from pointing out while taking Bartiromo along for a ride in a Black Hawk helicopter.
“There are some people who cross the border who do want to get apprehended, so they can get processed, and hopefully assimilate,” Abbott explained, according to Fox. “The people that [the Texas Department of Public Safety] arrests are the people who don’t want to be caught. They are known criminals. And they would wind up back in jail.”
The governor went on: “The action picks up at night. The stunning thing for me is that it used to be that most of the illegal crossing of the border would occur at nighttime. But, under this administration, it occurs in high volume during the daytime.”
Pressed on whether he’s been in communication with the White House on the mounting crisis, Abbott was blunt. “In a word, no,” he told Bartiromo. “Very different from the prior administration.”
“Great for the cartels”
Speaking with Bartiromo after their tour, Abbott again slammed President Joe Biden and his administration for its apparent apathy on the border crisis. “The president not mentioning the border in his State of the Union address — I think it shows that, candidly, he doesn’t care about the border,” the Texas governor said, referring to Biden’s speech last Wednesday to a joint session of Congress, the first of his presidency.
Abbott also told the Fox host that the Biden administration doesn’t even “want to resolve the challenges that we have on the border.”
“The first 100 days of the Biden administration, they have been great for the cartels, for the gangs, for the human traffickers who have been exploiting the border,” he said, according to Fox.
“Every state is affected by the people who are coming across the border illegally,” Abbott said, noting that “gang members will export the drugs to Chicago, to New York, to North or South Carolina, or even up to Washington state” and other parts of the country. “And that’s exactly why all of us need to join together in this process to make sure that we are securing it, so that we are stopping the drug traffickers, and, Maria, the human traffickers,” he added.
