Suspect hit with attempted murder charge over Times Square shooting that injured 3

The Hill reports that a suspect is now facing nearly a dozen charges over a shooting in Times Square earlier this month that left several people injured.

According to The Hill, police said in an update Friday that 31-year-old Farrakhan Muhammad is facing a total of 11 counts — including attempted murder — over his alleged role in the incident, which occurred in one of the busiest parts of New York City on May 8.

The Hill reports:

In addition to attempted murder, [Muhammad] is also charged with three counts of assault, three counts of reckless endangerment and four counts of criminal use of a firearm.

The suspect is currently being held in New York and has already made at least one appearance in court.

Three injured

The Hill reported earlier this month that several people had been shot near New York City’s Seventh Avenue and West 44th Street. The victims reportedly included a 4-year-old girl, a 23-year old woman, and a 44-year-old woman.

All three were said to be recovering from their injuries.

Police initially said just days after the shooting that they’d arrested Muhammad and his girlfriend, Kristine Vergara, The Hill reported. Authorities reportedly learned of Muhammad’s identity from his brother, who said he was the intended target of the shooting.

According to The New York Times, the “shots missed their target and struck the 4-year-old, who was in a stroller with her family as they shopped for toys, and two others.”

On the run

The 31-year-old suspect was taken into custody in Florida four days after the shooting “without incident,” The Hill said.

He and his girlfriend had previously been spotted in North Carolina, where they were reportedly captured on surveillance footage.

According to the New York Post, police said tips from community members were key in finding and capturing the suspect. “We received numerous Crimestoppers tips that were instrumental in [Muhammad’s] identification,” James Essig, the New York Police Department’s chief of detectives, said. “Through leads from the public via Crimestoppers tips and other investigative measures, we were able to determine that Mr. Muhammad was traveling out of state and heading south.”

According to NBC New York, the gun used in the May 8 shooting still has not been recovered.
