Let’s face it, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) is not only one of the most-hated Republican figures by supporters of former President Donald Trump, but there’s really nothing he’ll ever be able to do to overcome that stigma.
Proving that observation was what happened to the Utah Republican at an event over the weekend where he attempted to slam President Joe Biden’s agenda, presumably hoping that people would give him a break. According to the Washington Examiner, as he took the podium at the event, Romney was met with loud boos and jeers as the audience made clear that they aren’t big fans.
What happened?
The Republicans in attendance at the event were certainly not shy about expressing their disdain at Romney’s brand of politics and his perpetual dispute with the 45th president, even as the Utah Republican attempted to find common ground by bashing Biden’s performance.
Some of those in attendance shouted that they believe Romney is a “traitor” and a “communist” while others continued a sustained line of booing while Romney attempted to get a word in edgewise.

“I’m a man who says what he means, and you know I was not a fan of our last president’s character issues,” Romney said, which didn’t help with the poor reception.
“You can boo all you like,” Romney said as he presumably realized what a bad idea it was to take the stage. “I’ve been a Republican all of my life. My dad was the governor of Michigan, and I was the Republican nominee for president in 2012.”
Total humiliation
The boos and heckling showed no signs of slowing down, which actually prompted the outgoing chairman at the GOP event to ask Romney to momentarily step aside so that he could plead with the audience to show “respect.”
The crowd was also apparently not happy with Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R), as they booed him when he took the stage over his handling of the COVID-19 restrictions in the otherwise freedom-loving state of Utah.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) was seemingly the only high-profile figure who wasn’t met with such a cold reception, presumably due to his close alignment with Trump on most issues. The crowd reportedly offered Lee a warm reception when he took the stage.
While some influential Republicans are still trying to distance the party from Trump and his policy ideas, many in the party are against that idea and instead would rather embrace Trump and his kingmaker abilities as the GOP heads into the 2022 midterm elections.
Whether it’s Romney, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) or Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), it seems very obvious that Republican voters have all but closed the door on the GOP establishment while demanding that Republican leaders lean on Trump to lead the party to future victory.
