Media darling and Trump nemesis Liz Cheney is in danger of losing her leadership position in the Republican party once and for all.
Having alienated allies with her incessant Trump bashing, Rep. Cheney (R-WY) is facing a vote as soon as next week to remove her from leadership, according to Fox News’ congressional correspondent Chad Pergram.
The dramatic news comes after an unraveling between Cheney and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who sparked the ire of Trump supporters when he helped Cheney hold onto her position earlier this year.
Cheney could lose leadership spot
MAGA loyalists had unsuccessfully attempted to remove Cheney after she led the effort to impeach Trump over the Jan. 6 “insurrection.”
But Cheney’s hardline Never Trump stance has made her a thorn in the side of a party that has reached an uneasy truce with Trump. With the GOP focused on winning back the House in 2022, Cheney has been preoccupied with attacking Trump and relitigating Jan. 6 to no end.
McCarthy hinted at dissatisfaction in the ranks Tuesday, telling Fox News’ Steve Doocy that Republicans are doubtful Cheney can “carry out the message” as Republicans set their sights on Biden and his radical agenda.
And in a more revealing moment, McCarthy told Doocy on a hot mic that he was personally exhausted with Cheney’s grandstanding. “You know, I’ve lost confidence. … Well, someone just has to bring a motion, but I assume that will probably take place,” he said.
Tables turn on Cheney
While Cheney has few friends left in the GOP, the liberal mainstream media are in love, portraying the hawkish Republican as a martyr for “speaking truth to power.”
For her part, Cheney has responded to the rumored sacking with defiance, saying she refuses to “perpetuate lies” about the 2020 election and “whitewash what happened on Jan. 6.”
While Cheney has insisted that Trump has no place in the Republican Party, it appears the shoe is on the other foot.
To Cheney’s chagrin, Trump is still the de facto leader of the party, with millions of loyal followers. And as far as the “big lie” is concerned, a majority of Republican voters are decidedly in agreement with Trump that the election was fraudulent.
Trump, meanwhile, wants “warmonger” Cheney out of Congress completely, having vowed to replace her with a MAGA loyalist of his choosing.
