Apparently starting to take after President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had an embarrassing slip-up this past week.
The Daily Caller reports that Pelosi celebrated the birthday of baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays with a social media post that mistakenly featured a photo of a different baseball legend.
“An all-American icon”
Pelosi’s well wishes to Mays for his 90th birthday came in a tweet on Thursday. Others to post messages lauding the baseball icon included fellow Hall of Famer Derek Jeter and hockey icon Wayne Gretzky.
Mays long played for the San Francisco Giants, and Pelosi has been the congressional representative for the San Francisco area for more than three decades, since 1987. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the House speaker took to Twitter to celebrate in kind.
But her praiseful message was overshadowed by an image she included that showed baseball’s Willie McCovey, rather than Willie Mays.
“Happy 90th Birthday to an all-American icon, Willie Mays,” Pelosi wrote alongside the photo, according to the Daily Caller. “A trailblazing, record-breaking baseball player, civil rights leader, and champion for youth sports and well-being, Willie Mays is a civic legend and national treasure.”
McCovey also played for the Giants, but died in 2018, as the Daily Caller noted.
Wrong photo, right wedding?
The tweet was soon deleted from Pelosi’s account and reposted with the correct picture. In an accompanying statement, Pelosi celebrated what she called Mays’ “lasting impact” in the realm of civil rights reform.

In a statement issued later to KCBS Radio, the speaker’s office blamed the mix-up on a staffer.
“A staffer inadvertently selected the wrong photo for the tweet,” Pelosi’s office said. “The photo we wanted to use was of the Speaker and Willie Mays at Willie McCovey’s August 2018 wedding.”
The statement explained: “The quickly deleted photo was the wrong photo from the right wedding. We apologize for the error.”
