Vice President Kamala Harris put out a tweet Saturday encouraging her followers to “enjoy the long weekend” — but her message failed to include any mention of the important reason why many Americans had the day off work on Monday.
According to Newsweek, Harris’ tweet clearly missing the point of Memorial Day earned her the wrath of U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a freshman Republican from Georgia who attacked the vice president’s apparent apathy in a scathing tweet of her own.
Writing later Saturday, Greene said Harris “clearly care[s] nothing” about veterans who gave their lives to support what the GOP congresswoman called the VP’s “freedom killing Socialist BS.”
Not one single Veteran gave their life to support your freedom killing Socialist BS.
They served to protect our freedoms and our borders, which you clearly care nothing about since you haven’t been there once, VP Border Czar. https://t.co/642vlBDChu

“A reflection of the Democrat Party”
In a subsequent tweet, Greene called on Americans to “wake up to the FACT this is not an off tweet by [Harris].”
“Her political consultants did this,” Greene charged of Harris’ Saturday message, according to Newsweek. “It is a reflection of the Democrat [P]arty, who hates our freedom. And hates the Veterans who died defending it, so they purposely insult them.”
According to The Washington Times, Harris posted another tweet Sunday in which she seemed to try to smooth things over.
“Throughout our history our service men and women have risked everything to defend our freedoms and our country,” the vice president wrote. “As we prepare to honor them on Memorial Day, we remember their service and their sacrifice.”
“Care to mention WHY?”
But the damage was already done. According to Newsweek, Harris also took flak for her Saturday message from former Georgia Rep. Doug Collins (R), who offered a take similar to Greene’s. He wrote in a tweet: “As the [vice president] enjoys a long weekend, maybe she could read a couple of books on the sacrifices made by those we honor with this holiday.”
First-term Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert (CO) had strong words for Harris as well, asking in a tweet of her own: “Care to mention WHY we’re having a long weekend, Kamala?”
Even House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) jumped in the fray, as the Times noted.
Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember and express our gratitude to the men and women in uniform who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
It’s NOT just a long weekend.
