Vice President Kamala Harris has been widely criticized for her lack of action at the U.S.–Mexico border in the weeks since President Joe Biden tasked her with handling that “challenge,” but Biden knows just what to do about that: give her even more responsibilities.
In his latest move, Biden has put Harris in charge of the National Space Council, a task force created by George H.W. Bush via executive order but that was shuttered after his administration until former President Donald Trump brought it back in 2017, according to Politico.
The order requires the vice president to be chair of the council, and the Biden administration affirmed on Saturday that Harris would be taking up that position, Politico reported.
The council is intended to “coordinate national security priorities, civilian exploration, and the growing private economy of space,” according to Politico.
“Plant our flag on it”
Harris, for her part, said she was “honored” to take on the role. “In America, when we shoot for the moon, we plant our flag on it,” she tweeted.
As I’ve said before: In America, when we shoot for the moon, we plant our flag on it. I am honored to lead our National Space Council.

Harris plans to focus on “supporting sustainable development of commercial space activity, advancing peaceful norms and responsible behaviors in space, achieving peaceful exploration objectives with our allies and partners,” an official told Politico.
In addition, “climate change, STEM education, diversity in the workforce, promoting regional economic development, and enhancing cybersecurity in space systems” will be topics for the council in upcoming sessions, Politico said.
Changes to the original executive order could be coming after a review of the council and its objectives, officials noted.
Another do-nothing position?
As usual, it seems Democrats have seized on the council to advance their objectives to further transform society, rather than what it was originally intended for. What do workplace diversity and economic development have to do with space exploration?
But not to worry: if Harris’ track record on other responsibilities, like the border crisis that she and Biden still refuse to acknowledge, is any indication, not much will happen with this council.
The fact that Harris is just a heartbeat away from the presidency continues to boggle the mind.
