Florida Gov. DeSantis bans vaccine passports and COVID-19 emergency orders in new bill

There’s a good reason why Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R) popularity is skyrocketing among freedom-loving residents of his state.

According to the Washington Examiner, the governor signed into law this week a bill that not only suspends existing COVID-19 emergency orders, but also came through on his promise to ban the use of COVID-19 “vaccine passports,” as he’s claimed that such a document would be a clear violation of one’s medical privacy.

“The evidence-based thing to do”

Unlike many Democrats, who preached for over a year that they were only “following the science,” DeSantis made clear in his announcement that he’s actually following the science given what we now know about COVID-19 transmission and other related aspects.

“I’m going to sign the bill. It’s effective July 1. I’ll also sign an executive order pursuant to that bill invalidating all remaining local emergency COVID orders effective on July 1,” DeSantis said of the new bill on Monday. “But then, to bridge the gap between then and now, I’m going to suspend, under my executive power, the local emergency orders as it relates to COVID.”

DeSantis went on to point out that those who are still fearmongering and essentially telling people to hide in their houses or not go outside without a mask, even though they’re vaccinated, are very clearly not following available, updated science.

“I think folks that are saying that they need to be policing people at this point, if you’re saying that, you really are saying you don’t believe in the vaccines, you don’t believe in the data, you don’t believe in the science. We’ve embraced the vaccines. We’ve embraced the science on it,” DeSantis said.

His executive order and the soon-to-be-signed bill will not effect how businesses react to the pandemic, only for any existing government-mandated emergency orders and restrictions.

Absolutely no “vaccine passports”

Though he’s taken a heap of criticism from some Democrats over his thoughts on the vaccine passport idea, which is wildly unpopular in his state and others, the bill makes clear that such a document will not be one that comes to fruition in his state.

“You have a right to participate in society, go to a restaurant, movie, a ballgame, all these things without having to divulge this type of information,” DeSantis said.

Since March, when the idea of government or state-mandated vaccine passports was all the rage in the news headlines, DeSantis stood firmly against the idea.

With DeSantis’ leadership on the COVID-19 pandemic and as it winds down, it’s no wonder why his state is enjoying a massive population influx, presumably made up of people who appreciate having the freedom to make their own decisions and not depend on the government telling them what they’re allowed to do and when.
