Fauci sees more facemasks in America’s future

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is back obsessing about facemasks.

Breitbart reports that, over the weekend, Fauci let slip his vision of America’s future, which includes routine facemask wearing.

Fauci’s latest statement on masks

Fauci revealed his vision during an appearance Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” During that appearance, Chuck Todd asked Fauci whether Americans will soon be able to ditch the facemasks or whether facemasks are “going to be something we have with us in a seasonal aspect.”

“You know, that’s quite possible,” Fauci replied. “I think people have gotten used to the fact that wearing masks, clearly if you look at the data, diminishes respiratory diseases.”

Fauci went on to argue that facemasks virtually eliminated the flu this year, saying, “we’ve had practically a non-existent flu season this year, merely because people were doing the kind of public health things that were directed predominantly against COVID-19.”

For this reason, Fauci said that he could envision an America where facemasks are a common part of life, at least at certain times of the year.

“So, it is conceivable that as we go on a year or two or more from now, that during certain seasonal periods when you have respiratory-borne viruses like the flu, people might actually elect to wear masks to diminish the likelihood that you’ll be spreading these respiratory-borne diseases,” Fauci said.

Background

It is unlikely that Fauci’s comments will come as any surprise to the reader.

Fauci has been obsessing about masks for months now, at one point even recommending that people wear more than one for added protection. He has also insisted that it is advisable for vaccinated people to continue wearing masks, which has led many to wonder as to the point of coronavirus vaccinations.

The ironic thing here is that Fauci was one of those experts who, initially, when the first coronavirus first got going here in America, suggested that facemasks would do more harm than good, and, thus, ought not to be worn.

It remains to be seen whether Americans agree with Fauci that masking up is the way of the future. As the Washington Times notes, “American culture has long resisted mask-wearing, partly because of ties with criminality or duplicity and partly a preference for seeing people’s faces and hearing their words.”

The question is whether the coronavirus has changed the American culture’s view of facemasks. We’ll see.
