A pair of CNN hosts just got hit with some devastating news.
After years of working overtime to paint Donald Trump in a bad light, CNN primetime host Anderson Cooper and media critic Brian Stelter seem to be struggling to stay in the spotlight. According to a new report from BizPacReview, the two have each hit ratings lows in recent weeks, a sign of just how difficult it will be for left-wing media figures to stay relevant in the post-Trump era.
For Stelter, the tumbling ratings seem to be part of a long-running trend, according to BizPacReview’s Jon Dougherty.
Cooper, for his part, saw record low ratings during his two-week stint guest hosting Jeopardy!, rather than on the CNN airwaves.
The data is in
According to Fox News, Stelter’s Reliable Sources on CNN saw its lowest ratings of the year during the week ending in May 2. The program averaged just 810,000 viewers overall, and had a meager 163,000 viewership in the key demographic of adults aged 25–54, data from Nielsen Media Research showed.
That marks the fifth consecutive week — and the seventh week out of the past eight — that Stelter’s show has failed to reach the 1 million viewers mark, on average.
Adding insult to injury, those record lows for Stelter came the week he returned from vacation, and his guest host, John Avlon, actually drew better viewership than Stelter while filling in. With Avlon at the helm, Reliable Sources had pulled in an average of 907,000 viewers, including 182,000 in the 25–54 age range, according to reports.
The wrong answer
As for Cooper, The Wrap reports that his stint hosting Jeopardy! was among the lowest-rated since new shows resumed following the death of famed host Alex Trebek. Cooper earned a 5.1 rating during his first week hosting, which ended on April 25. That’s 7% lower than his immediate predecessor behind the Jeopardy! podium, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who garnered a 5.6 rating in his first week as guest host and a 5.5. rating in his second week.
Cooper’s low rating was even beneath that of celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz, who received a 5.2 rating for his debut week as a guest host.
The rating for Cooper’s second week as guest host has not yet been released, The Wrap notes.
The bottom line
While Cooper, Stelter, and their supporters will no doubt have numerous excuses to explain the dismal ratings, the numbers have made at least one thing quite clear: without former President Donald Trump to kick around, the mainstream media is floundering.
They may never admit it, but the likes of these CNN hosts have to be missing Trump by now.
