President Joe Biden has created a crisis of illegal immigrants flooding the border that far exceeds the capabilities of the federal government to temporarily house and process.
Biden likely just compounded the problem by quadrupling the cap on refugee admissions for the current 2021 fiscal year, the Associated Press reported.
The move was in direct response to intense pressure from activist groups and fellow Democrats who attacked the president’s initial decision to delay increasing the refugee admissions cap until the situation at the southern border was properly addressed.
The two problems are intrinsically linked given that the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) is responsible for vetting, processing and resettling refugees as well as the unaccompanied migrant children who arrive at the southern border.
Massive increase in refugee admissions
In a statement issued Monday, Biden announced that the refugee admissions cap for 2021 would be raised to 62,500 from the 15,000 limit set by his predecessor, former President Donald Trump.
The welcoming rhetoric that fueled the migrant surge at the border was also evident, as Biden declared, “It is important to take this action today to remove any lingering doubt in the minds of refugees around the world who have suffered so much, and who are anxiously waiting for their new lives to begin.”
Biden’s statement also made clear that his administration viewed that new figure as less of a cap and more as a goal to be reached and surpassed, as evidenced by his vow to double the number in 2022 to 125,000 refugees admitted and resettled.
Concurrent with the president’s statement was an executive order to formally set the increased refugee admissions policy and allocate slots within that 62,500 figure for various regions around the globe.
Border policies exploited
Meanwhile, a report from The Daily Wire revealed the true extent of the crisis at the border, which Biden’s administration strenuously avoids referring to as a “crisis” and instead downplays as a “challenge.”
That report exposes how incomplete sections of the border wall system are being exploited by drug cartels and traffickers, how the detained migrants are being held in severely overcrowded facilities, and how smugglers are using the chaos to move drugs, illicit contraband, criminals, and even potential terrorists back and forth without notice.
Unfortunately, due to Biden’s actions Monday, the crisis will almost certainly grow worse than it already is.
