Evidence continues to mount that the COVID-19 pandemic that killed millions of people worldwide may have originated in a Wuhan, China virology lab after all.
On Monday, the White House was still dismissing the theory that the Wuhan lab was the origin of the virus, but by Friday it was scrambling to explain its previous position and the reasons why it dropped a U.S. investigation into a lab origin, Breitbart reported.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki denied on Monday that there was a U.S. intelligence report stating that three Wuhan researchers went to the hospital for treatment of coronavirus-like symptoms in November 2019. “We have no means of confirming that or denying that,’ Psaki said, and claimed that The Wall Street Journal story on the subject was not based on “a report from the United States.”
“What we can’t do, and what I would caution anyone doing, is leaping ahead of an actual international process,” she said concerning the lab leak theory. “We don’t have enough data and information to jump to a conclusion at this point in time.”
Relying on China
Psaki said the White House was relying on data from China that had not yet been received. “We need that data, we need that information from the Chinese government,” she said — an odd statement considering China has been anything but honest and forthcoming since the coronavirus first became a concern.
New reports seem to have gotten ahead of the White House as the week progressed, however.
By Wednesday, news broke that President Joe Biden had shut down a State Department investigation into the origin of the virus at the same time more evidence came out showing that the Wuhan lab theory was not only possible, but likely. It was not immediately clear whether Biden just didn’t care to find out where this deadly virus came from, or whether he was actively trying to cover it up.
Neither scenario was a good look for Biden, and he was forced to release declassified information about the investigation and call for the intelligence community to “redouble” its efforts to find out where the virus came from.
Damage control
Deputy White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tried to do damage control for Psaki, arguing that there had “always” been an investigation into the origins of the virus and that the timing of the release of information was coincidental. It was not linked to any recent reporting, she claimed.
On Thursday, Psaki doubled down on Jean-Pierre’s statements and stated that Biden was extending the investigation into virus origins for 90 days.
She also directly contradicted her earlier statements about waiting for Chinese data, saying it has become clear that China is not cooperating with any international investigation.
It was a stark reversal but leaves questions about why the investigation was shut down and why the lab leak theory was dismissed as recently as Monday, if Biden supposedly knew about the evidence “a month ago,” according to Jean-Pierre.
