Although she has been rejected by many members of her own party, U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) appears to be finding new friends on the other side of the aisle.
In a revealing moment ahead of President Joe Biden’s recent address of a joint congressional session, Cheney gave the president a fist bump.
“Never been a greater betrayal”
Over the course of the past few months, Cheney has attracted praise from progressives — along with the lasting enmity of former President Donald Trump and his supporters — after leading an effort to impeach Trump for his supposed role in inciting a riot on Capitol Hill in January.
At the time, she said that there had “never been a greater betrayal” by a commander in chief.
Following Wednesday’s speech by Biden and her friendly interaction, however, she struck a much different tone, saying: “We’re not sworn enemies. We’re Americans.”
For his part, Biden is still focused on the Jan. 6 riot, calling it the “worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War” during his address this week.
Over the course of his roughly hour-long speech, the president went on to lay out an agenda that Cheney later referred to as “dangerous,” though clearly not off-putting enough to undermine her sense of collegiality.
“Warmongering fool”
“I will fight back against these dangerous plans and always stand up for the interests of our state and for the constitutional values that we hold dear,” the Wyoming Republican later said of the president’s agenda.
On the topic of constitutional values, Cheney’s constituents might be interested in hearing her opinion on Biden’s declaration that constitutional amendments are not absolute as part of his ongoing effort to pass new gun control measures. After all, firearms are popular in Wyoming.
In addition to greeting Biden, Cheney was also seen chatting with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), another establishment Republican who has earned Trump’s ire.
Despite the backlash against her from within the GOP, Cheney has vowed to hold onto her congressional seat, declaring that she is “absolutely dedicated and committed to winning [her] primary race and earning the votes of the people of Wyoming, both in the primary and in the general election.”
Trump seems committed to preventing that outcome, however, most recently calling her a “warmongering fool” in a public statement furthering his effort to encourage a robust primary challenge against her in next year’s midterm election.
