The controversy on the heels of the new election and voter laws passed in Georgia last month continue to politically divide the country as a number of major corporations, including Major League Baseball, make drastic moves in protest of the new reforms.
According to Breitbart, former President Donald Trump issued a statement this week in which he officially urged his tens of millions of supporters to launch a “boycott” of the MLB and other companies, like Delta Airlines and Coca-Cola, who have chosen to protest the election reforms signed into law by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R).
What did he say?
The president’s statement came on the heels of a bombshell announcement from MLB headquarters that, in a public protest of the new laws, the league will pull the upcoming All-Star game and draft from Atlanta and move it to another state.
Georgia’s new voter and election laws were condemned by no less than 100 major companies, such as Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, Google, Apple, American Express and others who suggested either directly or indirectly that the laws were designed to suppress Black voters in the Peach State.
Trump fired back at the MLB and those companies in the best way he knows how to take action — by calling for nationwide boycotts.
“Boycott baseball and all of the woke companies that are interfering with Free and Fair Elections,” Trump wrote. “Are you listening Coke, Delta, and all!” Trump’s statement read.
“[T]hey are afraid of the Radical Left Democrats who do not want voter I.D., which is desperately needed, to have anything to do with our elections,” Trump said of the MLB and the corporations launching similar protests of the new laws, which contain stricter requirements for showing identification to cast a vote.
Tragic backfiring
While the aforementioned companies and their knee-jerk reactions were celebrated by high-profile Democrats, including President Joe Biden who encouraged the MLB to pull the All-Star game from the state, some Georgia Democrats are warning that such drastic moves will hurt the very people that Democrats claim to want to protect.
That was evidenced by former gubernatorial candidate Stacy Abrams (D)– a political operative with plenty of state and national pull — who issued a statement condemning the MLB and other companies from pulling events and operations from the state, saying that it’ll only serve economically damage people of color.
“On behalf of PoC targeted by #SB202 to lose votes + now wages, I urge events & productions to come & speak out or stay & fight,” Abrams tweeted on Friday.
According to Fox News, another high-profile Democrat, Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), broke rank with Biden and other Democrats, echoing Abrams’ claims that pulling companies and events from the state is not the correct way to protest. Ossoff claimed that the protests should be targeted toward Georgia Republican officials and their ability to raise money, instead.
Only time will tell just how “woke” corporate America will push the boundaries and continue to alienate half of the country by getting involved in state-level politics, but if it continues at the current rate, things will look a lot different in the near future.
