Protesters surround truck, chant slurs at police and military in wake of Chauvin verdict: Reports

Not all protesters were deterred from their demonstrations after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder for the death of 46-year-old George Floyd during an arrest last year.

After hearing the verdict, some outside the courthouse wept and cheered, but others chanted slurs against the military and police and even surrounded a tractor-trailer as their pent-up anger apparently had nowhere to go, the Washington Examiner reported.

“F*** the National Guard!” some protesters reportedly shouted. (Editor’s note: The video shown below contains language that may be offensive to some.)

Unspent anger

Activists also surrounded a semi truck trying to drive through the protest area and tried to break its windows, the Examiner said.

Still, not all protesters were bent on causing damage. Some hugged and locked arms, chanting, “All three counts!”

Floyd’s girlfriend, Courtney Ross, also prayed with protesters after the verdict, reports noted. She reacted to Chauvin’s conviction by thanking God, saying, “God is good” and “proved that today.”

Chauvin sentencing

Chauvin was taken into custody after the verdict and now awaits sentencing in about eight weeks. For his part in killing Floyd, Chauvin could get up to 40 years in prison, the Associated Press notes.

The judge in the case has acknowledged that Chauvin could have grounds for appeal after Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) effectively tried to intimidate the jury by telling protesters to “stay on the street” until they get justice.

“I’ll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned,” Judge Peter Cahill declared while ruling against a mistrial, according to Politico.

“This goes back to what I’ve been saying from the beginning. I wish elected officials would stop talking about this case, especially in a manner that is disrespectful to the rule of law and to the judicial branch and our function,” Cahill added.
