Fox News Channel has made headlines in recent months for additions and departures from its on-air lineup and behind-the-camera staff.
On Thursday, however, Mediaite reported that the cable news company has signed host Bret Baier to stay with the network for at least another five years.
“Home away from home”
The Special Report host addressed his new contract in a statement describing himself as “thrilled” to remain in his position.
Hired in 1998 to the fledgling network, Baier went on to declare that Fox News had been his “home away from home for almost a quarter century.”
Looking forward, he said that he anticipates working with his “incredibly talented team to cover the important stories of our time in the fair and honest way our viewers expect.”
Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott also commented on the news, describing Baier as a host who “has masterfully covered some of the most consequential news stories of our time,” adding that the network is “thrilled to have him continue his extraordinary journalism career at Fox News for many years to come.”
Baier has hosted his current weeknight program since 2009 and his ratings have consistently led cable news programming in the 6 p.m. time slot.
“That did not occur”
He and his show have been at the center of a few controversies over the years, including a 2011 report from Judicial Watch that revealed emails from within the Obama administration that revealed particular disdain.
In one of the correspondences, then-White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki — now President Joe Biden’s press secretary — accused Baier of behaving like a “lunatic” and performing “stupid” work for Fox News.
Shortly after November’s general election, Baier acknowledged that the network overestimated how well Democrats would perform in congressional races.
“There are still a handful of races undecided,” he said at the time. “On election night, the Fox News Decision Desk correctly predicted soon after 9:00 Eastern that Democrats would retain control of the House. But they also estimated Democrats would add about five seats to their majority. That did not occur. Republicans have gained six seats with multiple races yet to be decided.”
Baier also served as co-anchor of the network’s election-night coverage last year.
