Trump says GOP has ‘deep bench’ if he decides not to run in 2024

In the first indication that former President Donald Trump might not make another run for the job in 2024, Trump said in an interview on Monday that Republicans have a “deep bench” even without him.

Tump didn’t say he wasn’t going to run; in fact, he said he would make a decision about running “some time later.”

But his talk of other potential candidates is the first indication that he’s considering all his options and that he doesn’t see himself as the only one who could do a good job leading the country.

“We’ve got a lot of great people”

The Republican Party “is stacked” with “very good people,” Trump said on The Truth With Lisa Boothe podcast, naming Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem among others.

“I think we’ve got a lot of great people in the Republican Party,” he said.

Trump has easily won most polls of preferred candidates in 2024, but he would be nearly 78 by the time he took office in 2025. There’s no telling what could happen to the health of a person his age in nearly four years.

He would be the same age President Joe Biden is now when he took office, and we see how well that’s working out for Biden. That being said, Trump is currently in good health by all indications, and there’s no reason he couldn’t serve another term as president if his good health continues.

Others even older than Biden are still serving in prominent positions, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) at 80 and Sen. Diane Feinstein at 85.

What’s special about Trump

While Trump is correct that the Republicans he named are all very strong, it seems that none of them has the brash boldness or the imperviousness to criticism and attacks that so many voters loved about Trump.

All three of the candidates Trump named have allowed Trump’s influence to make them bolder, and have withstood criticism that might have caused a weaker candidate to fold.

And after the damage Trump suffered with the Capitol riot, he might do better in a support or advisory role while allowing less damaged candidates to bear the brunt of any attacks.

No matter what he decides to do, he will have a huge group of Americans ready to support his efforts and to Make America Great Again, with or without him in the driver’s seat.
