‘These Democrats will just exceed their authority’: Michigan lawmaker says new election laws coming

During his keynote address to close out the Conservatives Political Action Conference on Sunday, Donald Trump reiterated his calls to reform America’s electoral process.

The former president’s remarks are being echoed by Michigan state Rep. Matt Hall, who said his state is in desperate need of electoral reform.

In an interview with Breitbart reporter and radio host Kyle Olson on Saturday, Hall laid out some of the problems his state is facing.

Michigan auditor general finds irregularities

“The Michigan auditor general found that there were many people across our state who were over 120 years old, which is longer than the oldest living person and we found there’s over 300,000 people who were inactive voters who haven’t voted in over 20 years,” Hall explained.

The lawmaker said that both the pandemic and the election have exposed how Democrats “will just exceed their authority.”

“I mean, they’ll just break laws and if you don’t have judges that will defend the laws, that’s how we get in this situation,” the former House Oversight Committee chairman continued.

Hall explained that legislative proposals were in the works to fix some of these issues, and that Republicans would seek to present them as ballot initiatives if they faced a veto from Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

“We’re going to do everything we can to try to get this through and signed by the governor, but if we don’t, we’re going to have to look at other options,” Hall said.

Bill would remove dead people from rolls

One legislative proposal is House Bill 4127, which would purge dead and inactive voters from the rolls, but Hall stressed that “there’s a lot of things that we need to change in our election law in Michigan.”

Hall also spoke of the need to prevent the secretary of state from sending unsolicited absentee ballot applications as well as provide more training to local election officials.

In Trump’s speech on Sunday, he cited loose election practices as being enablers for fraud.

“Republicans should be the party of honest elections that can give everyone confidence in the future of our country,” Trump told the audience. “Without honest elections, who has confidence?”
