A left-wing member of San Francisco’s school board is facing calls to resign after it was discovered that she made anti-Asian posts on social media, the Washington Examiner reported.
The demands come in the wake of a mass shooting in Georgia last week that claimed the lives of six Asian women as well as two white individuals.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Board Vice President Alison Collins posted a series of tweets in 2016 that accused Asian Americans of “white supremacist thinking to assimilate and ‘get ahead.'”
She tweeted that “many Asian American Ts, Ss, and Ps” (teachers, students, and parents) of promoting “the ‘model minority’ BS” and in one tweeted demanded to know “[w]here are the vocal Asians speaking up against Trump?”
Collins: Remarks were taken out of context
“Don’t Asian Americans know they are on his list as well?” Collins demanded. “Do they think they won’t be deported? profiled? beaten? Being a house n—– is still being a n—–. You’re still considered ‘the help.'”
The school board official, who is Black, claimed that she was attempting to “combat anti-black racism in the Asian community” as well as “at my daughters’ mostly Asian Am school.”
News of Collins’ remarks have reportedly sparked outrage in San Francisco, with a group of parents announcing that they are beginning a recall effort.
Difficult conversations
Collins responded to the controversy via a Medium post in which she defended her comments and accused critics of taking her words out of context.
“As a Black woman, a mother, an educator and a fierce advocate of equity in our schools I utilize my social media platforms to speak out on race and racism,” she wrote. “Even when these conversations are difficult in our very divided society.”
She continued, “A number of tweets and social media posts I made in 2016 have recently been highlighted. They have been taken out of context, both of that specific moment and the nuance of the conversation that took place.”
Collins also claimed that her daughter witnessed an incident at school in which “her Asian American peers were taunting her Latinx classmate about ‘sending kids back to Mexico’ and the KKK.”
This is not the first time Collins has been at the center of controversy. According to the Washington Examiner, she has supported plans to strip the names of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln from local schools.
