President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, has been at the center of several scandals in recent months, including new allegations about a 2018 incident in which his gun was reportedly placed in a trash receptacle and ultimately lost.
In a 2,500 word text message he sent to his sister-in-law, Liz Secundy, Biden appears to contradict assertions by the Secret Service that its agents had been involved in the ordeal.
“My problem to deal with”
Secundy’s sister, Hallie Biden, who was romantically linked to Biden, threw the gun in a dumpster outside of a supermarket, he reportedly wrote in the text. When she went back to retrieve it, the firearm was gone.
“She stole the gun out of my truck lock box and threw it in a garbage can full to the top at Jansens,” Hunter Biden wrote. “Then told me it was my problem to deal with.”
After that, he wrote that “the police the FBI the secret service came on the scene” at which point Hallie Biden allegedly told them she was afraid he would use the gun to harm himself because of his “drug and alcohol problem and our volatile relationship and that she was afraid for the kids.”
Although the Secret Service issued a statement denying any involvement in the incident, subsequent evidence showed that agents went to the gun store where Hunter Biden purchased the gun 11 days later in search of related paperwork.
A dumpster diver reportedly found the gun and later returned it to law enforcement.
“President Biden did not have any knowledge”
As for the text message between Hunter Biden and Secundy, it was reportedly retrieved from a laptop belonging to Biden after it was abandoned at a Delaware computer repair shop.
Law enforcement officials say involvement by the Secret Service would have been inappropriate since Biden was under investigation by the Delaware State Police and FBI at the time.
For his part, the gun store owner reportedly refused to hand over records to agents because he was afraid they would attempt to cover up Biden’s role if the missing gun had been used in a crime. He later gave the documents to representatives from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
The White House issued a statement regarding the latest scandal, insisting: “President Biden did not have any knowledge of, or involvement in, the Secret Service’s alleged role in this incident, and neither he nor any family member was a protectee at that time.”
Also included in the younger Biden’s text message were references to the dysfunctional relationship he had with Hallie Biden, who briefly lived with him after her husband — and his brother — Beau Biden died in 2015.
