Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill are discussing plans to eliminate the Senate filibuster, which gives the minority party important influence in the passage of legislation.
As Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity told his audience on Tuesday night, the effort should concern American citizens.
“Now they will just change the rules”
He warned viewers that eliminating the filibuster would represent “the single largest power grab in modern American political history,” opening the door to further extreme developments.
Hannity argued that Democrats are fully aware “that the socialist utopia vision that they have” will fail to attract the 60-vote threshold needed to advance bills to President Joe Biden’s desk.
“So now they will just change the rules,” he added. “Now the Democrats are in charge and it must be abolished immediately so they can just pass anything and everything they want and ram it down the country’s throat.”
According to Hannity, the main factor Americans should understand about the Democratic Party is that it is “filled with now the most radical far-left individuals of any major political party in modern history.”
He went on to declare that the party is pursuing “power over everything — over the Constitution, over the Bill of Rights, over the rule of law, over basic fairness and justice” and hopes to usher in “one-party rule … in perpetuity forever and ever.”
“A completely scorched earth Senate”
The Senate’s official website pays tribute to the filibuster as a symbol of the chamber’s “tradition of unlimited debate,” describing the political tactic as “a loosely defined term for action designed to prolong debate and delay or prevent a vote on a bill, resolution, amendment, or other debatable question.”
As the website explained, the filibuster dates back more than a century to the 1917 decision to adopt “a rule to allow a two-thirds majority to end a filibuster, a procedure known as ‘cloture.'”
Nearly six decades later, “the Senate reduced the number of votes required for cloture from two-thirds (67) to three-fifths (60) of the 100-member Senate,” the website adds.
If Democrats are successful in abolishing the filibuster, debates could be brought to an end by a simple majority vote. Nevertheless, moderates in the party like Sens. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia have both expressed reservations over such a change.
Earlier this week, Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) issued a warning across the political aisle regarding the possible implications of removing the filibuster, declaring: “Nobody serving in this chamber can even begin — can even begin to imagine — what a completely scorched earth Senate would look like.”
