Breitbart reports that Sen. Linsey Graham (R-SC) is, once again, making a legislative push for granting amnesty to illegal immigrants living in America.
Behind the latest proposal is Rep. Maria Salazar (R-FL). Besides Graham, Salazar is joined by Reps. David Valado (R-CA), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Fred Upton (R-MI), Burgess Owens (R-UT), Blake Moore (R-UT), John Curtis (R-UT), Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Claudia Tenney (R-NY).
The Republicans latest proposal
Salazar revealed her amnesty plan, called the “Dignity Proposal,” during a press conference that she held on Wednesday.
Salazar’s proposal would give green cards to illegal aliens living in America who are either enrolled or eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). It would also allow these individuals to eventually apply for green cards and become American citizens.
Salazar’s proposal would additionally give 10-year work visas to the rest of America’s illegal immigrant population, so long as certain conditions are met, including passing a background check, paying taxes, and working. These individuals would not be eligible for “means-tested benefits or entitles,” and they must pay a fine.
But, after completing these work visas, these individuals would then be able to start a five-year program to secure a green card and eventually American citizenship. The program would include English and civics courses.
It total, there is believed to be anywhere between 11 and 22 million illegal aliens currently living in the United States. About 1.5 to 3.3 million would fall into the category of being either enrolled or eligible for DACA.
In addition to the above, Salazar’s proposal would, according to Breitbart, include “mandatory E-Verify, funding for a ‘full border infrastructure system,’ asylum reform, and increased interior immigration enforcement.”
Background
This all comes as House Democrats are getting ready to push for their own amnesty bill. Both sides though, have a major issue to deal with: the current crisis occurring at the Southern border.
The fact of the matter is that these amnesty proposals may not be the most popular proposals in the first place. But, they are likely to be even less popular as reports indicate that more people are attempting to illegally cross the border now than in decades as a result of President Joe Biden’s lax immigration policies.
Accordingly, critics are arguing that now is not the right time for an amnesty deal.
House Democrats, nonetheless, plan to push their proposal through at some point this week. At the moment, it is unlikely that any amnesty proposal would be able to overcome the Senate filibuster.
