Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s week went from really bad to incredibly worse as yet another former staffer revealed that she believes she was sexually harassed by the governor, which prompted a flurry of new calls for his resignation, including several from high-profile congressional Democrats.
According to Townhall, Cuomo doubled-down on Friday during a COVID-19 briefing, via teleconference, in which he claimed the politicians calling for his resignation were acting in a “reckless and dangerous” manner.
Refusing to resign
Cuomo, in the usual blunt, repetitive manner in which he speaks, assured everyone listening that he still won’t consider resigning, even as the number of women who come out against him continues to increase.
He went on to say that he respects the right that those women have to speak out, but in the same breath, he suggested that there could be alternative motivations in cases where a person makes an allegation of that nature against someone else.
“I won’t speculate about people’s possible motives, but I can tell you as a former attorney general who’s gone through this situation many times, there are often many motivations for making an allegation, and that is why you need to know the facts before you make a decision,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo then slammed the politicians — which number in the dozens — who have already come out with calls for his resignation without having the “facts,” as Cuomo repeated numerous times on the call and in prior briefings.
He went on to suggest that he’s a victim of “cancel culture,” suggesting that the demands for his resignation are simply apart of the dirty side of state politics, saying “People know the difference between playing politics, bowing to cancel culture, and the truth.”
The pressure mounts
While Cuomo is certainly entitled to due process like any other American, what he apparently fails to grasp or, more likely, won’t admit to, is the fact that his sexual harassment scandal is a massive distraction for the Democratic party, especially at a state level, which is why so many high-profile Democrats want him out, post-haste.
That was made especially clear in a bombshell statement from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) who issued a joint statement explaining that the situation has boiled over and has rendered Cuomo’s ability to continue to govern completely ineffective.
“Due to the multiple, credible sexual harassment and misconduct allegations, it is clear that Governor Cuomo has lost the confidence of his governing partners and the people of New York. Governor Cuomo should resign,” the New York senators wrote in a joint statement, according to Fox News.
Their statement came in the wake of several additional high-profile New York Democrats, like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Jerry Nadler (D-NY) issuing similar calls for Cuomo to throw in the towel and face the music.
In other words, the only “reckless and dangerous” situation at this point is Cuomo remaining in office and as tough as he might act, it’s clear that his shields are quickly being taken down, as he’s essentially lost the support of the entire party. His days as governor will most likely be short-lived, at this point.
