Americans of all stripes, particularly leftist pundits, have been sounding the alarm about a rise in harassment and even violence directed at Asian-Americans.
One conservative columnist pointed to a recent example that he claimed would be unlikely to gain traction among Democrats and the mainstream media, however, because it does not fit their narrative.
Confrontation on city bus
The Miami New Times broke the story last week, releasing a video clip reportedly captured on a public bus near Miami that appeared to show a Black man using a slur against a woman of Asian descent.
When the woman asked him to pull his facemask up, the man replied: “Mind your godd*** business, Chinese lady.”
He went on to call her an “ugly ass c****” and told another woman to “smile for this c****.”
The incident came in the aftermath of a mass shooting in Georgia that left eight victims dead — including six Asian women. That tragic incident led to speculation that it was a hate crime and increased the prevailing narrative that whites pose a threat to minorities — particularly Asian-Americans.
Demonstrations erupted in the days following the shootings at three area massage parlors as protesters demanded an end to “Asian hate.”
“The greatest terrorist threat to our country”
Of course, federal crime statistics indicate that African-Americans are responsible for the largest share of anti-Asian violence.
Furthermore, there appears to be no consistent standard among reporters regarding what crimes or actions are deemed to be evidence of racial animus.
Earlier this week, a Syrian immigrant allegedly gunned down 10 people at a Colorado supermarket, but there have been no major media reports speculating that the suspect was motivated by hatred of the predominantly white victims.
Meanwhile, the vice president’s niece has attracted criticism for claiming that the alleged gunman was of European descent, tweeting: “Violent white men are the greatest terrorist threat to our country.”
Meena Harris has subsequently deleted the tweet, replacing it with one that blamed her “assumption” on the fact that he was “taken into custody alive and the fact that the majority of mass shootings in the U.S. are carried out by white men.”
