Biden breaks silence on allegations against Cuomo, doesn’t call for resignation

Another woman has leveled accusations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior against Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, becoming the seventh individual to do so, local ABC New York station WACB reported.

While a number of prominent Democrats have called for the governor’s resignation in light of the growing scandal, President Joe Biden has been notably silent on the issue. On Sunday, the president finally broke his silence, but failed to call for Cuomo’s resignation.

When asked about the scandal during a question and answer session on the White House South Lawn, Biden replied, “I think the investigation is underway and we should see what it brings us,” according to Fox News.

Another prominent Democrat, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), has also resisted calling for Cuomo’s resignation.

Pelosi’s double standard

On Sunday, Pelosi told ABC News’ This Week that “there’s zero tolerance for sexual harassment” and claimed that the House of Representatives has taken “very strong measures.”

However, the San Francisco Democrat stopped short of demanding that Cuomo step down, saying that she would “see the results of the investigation” being conducted by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

“What I’m saying is the governor should look inside his heart – he loves New York – to see if he can govern effectively. And that could be one of the considerations that he has,” Pelosi said.

The speaker was far less willing to reserve judgment when allegations of sexual misconduct were made against then Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in 2018.

According to Fox News, Pelosi said at the time that Kavanaugh’s supporters were “cowardly, patriarchal people” and women who make accusations should be believed by “default.”

Nursing home scandal

For his part, Cuomo has seen his image take a nose-dive in recent months after being praised incessantly by Democrats and members of the mainstream media for his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Yet even his COVID record has now been sullied after evidence emerged that his administration attempted to cover up the number of nursing home deaths in New York.

Last August, the Trump Justice Department announced that it was investigating whether Cuomo’s order forcing nursing homes to accept infected patients played a role in his state’s high COVID death rate.
