Though the shooting that occurred Monday in Boulder, Colorado was nothing short of tragic and heartbreaking, it was only a matter of time before it was politicized by the left.
According to the Washington Examiner, it took less than 24 hours for high-profile Democrats, including President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to issue calls for a variety of “gun control” measures, such as banning “assault rifles” and limiting access to or banning high-capacity magazines.
“Common sense steps”
Biden was quick to deploy the “common sense” gun control talking points following the Boulder grocery store shooting, immediately calling on Congress to take action on gun control legislation, including enhancing background checks and banning certain styles of firearms.
“I don’t need to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take common sense steps or save the lives in the future, and to urge my colleagues in the House and Senate to act,” the president said on Tuesday at the White House. “We can ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country once again.”
Given the number of shootings and gun-related deaths that occur in Democrat-led cities across the country every weekend, it’s surprising that Biden waited for a mass shooting to issue the call for action on the matter.
Biden managed to put politics aside for a few minutes — as any sympathetic human being should — and recognized the victims involved in the mass shooting, offering his sympathies to the families while mentioning the death of police officer Eric Talley, who’s being hailed as a hero for his actions.
Ironically, Biden proclaimed that in the wake of the shooting, passing gun control laws shouldn’t be a “partisan issue,” even though Democrats are very clearly making it one, just like they have for practically every single mass shooting in the past decade.
Schumer promises action
Following the shooting president’s call for Congress to take action on the issue, Schumer vowed to bring the gun control debate to the top of the Senate’s priority list after blaming Republicans for the reason why it already hasn’t been tackled.
He failed to mention that Democrats’ idea of gun control typically has the greatest impact on law-abiding Americans, as those who commit gun violence in the streets — largely a gang issue — aren’t concerned with enhanced background checks and bans on certain firearms.
“This Senate will be different,” Schumer said. “This Senate is going to debate and address the epidemic of gun violence in this country.”
So far, multiple gun control measures have been introduced in both chambers of Congress, with most of them focusing on the banning of “assault-style weapons” and the high-capacity magazines used in those types of firearms. Though it’s been suggested that taxing or banning certain kinds of ammunition could eventually be on the table, there’s nothing officially on the table as of now.
Only time will tell if Democrats are able to exploit the Boulder tragedy to finally push through gun control legislation that they’ve fantasized about for years, but with their current level of control in Congress, it’s definitely much closer to reality now.
