Washington Post editorial slams Biden for violating Catholic teachings on abortion

President Joe Biden has made a point of referencing his Catholic faith in public statements of all sorts.

His support of abortion, however, has led to plenty of backlash from pro-life critics — including in the pages of the Washington Post.

“Guilty of profound injustice”

One editorial recently published by the newspaper includes the authors’ opinion that Biden is “guilty of profound injustice” for pushing his pro-abortion agenda.

Some pundits have made a big deal about the fact that the former vice president is only the second Catholic to be inaugurated as president. On the other hand, others are taken aback by views on the sanctity of life that clearly diverge from the Catholic Church’s teachings.

Ramesh Ponnuru and Robert P. George addressed that point in their latest op-ed, arguing that Biden “flagrantly rejects” his own faith’s tenets on the issue.

At the outset, the authors introduce readers to some basic scientific and religious principles.

According to their assertions, science “teaches us that at conception a new and distinct member of the species homo sapiens comes to be,” writing that Catholicism adds to that the belief “that we have a solemn obligation to do what we can to see to it that justice is done to all human beings — including those at the earliest developmental stages.”

“The cornerstone of the common good”

They went on to call abortion “a grave injustice” under Catholic teachings, as are the laws that permit or endorse it.

Citing the admonitions of Pope Francis, the authors noted that the church’s current leader has asked for “all politicians, regardless of their faith convictions, to treat the defense of the lives of those who are about to be born and enter into society as the cornerstone of the common good.”

For his part, Biden has attempted to distance himself personally from the issue by insisting that he would not impose his own opposition to abortion on others.

Nevertheless, Ponnuru and George are among those who find that argument insufficient, writing that he “favors excluding a particular class of human beings from the same protection against homicide that he favors for everyone else.”

In the first days of his term, Biden made multiple moves designed to roll back protections for the unborn pass by his predecessor, including the rescission of the so-called Mexico City policy that prevented U.S. taxpayer money from funding abortion procedures overseas.
