Since the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, Democrats and the media have cast the event as being reflective of all Trump supporters and conservatives, and have accused former President Donald Trump of directly inciting and being a co-conspirator with the rioters.
Violence on the part of left-wing mobs, however, has received far less attention. This is a fact that Trump defense attorney Michael van der Veen — knows about firsthand. During a post-impeachment trial interview with Fox News on Saturday, van der Veen revealed that his Philadelphia home had been targeted on Friday.
“My home was attacked,” van der Veen said.
“Under siege”
“[M]y entire family, my business, my law firm are under siege right now,” van der Veen explained.
“I don’t really want to go into that, though. What I’d really like to do is talk about the merits of the case,” he added.
According to a report from Newsweek, the word “traitor” was spray-painted in giant red letters across the entrance to the driveway of van der Veen’s house with an arrow pointing toward his home. According to investigators, eggs were also thrown at the property.
Newsweek reported that law enforcement is “investigating the incident,” but added that “police said there were no suspects at the time of publication.”
Fellow Trump attorney targeted
Van der Veen was not the only one on Trump’s impeachment defense team who was targeted. Fellow Trump lawyer Bruce Castor told Fox News that he too has been subjected to harassment.
“My house was the subject of unrest. These people are lawyers and they expect to do their jobs without having fear for their personal safety,” he said.
Castor continued, “If the country has reached the point where somebody needs a lawyer that lawyer is themselves attacked, where are we going to be going forward when somebody truly is in need of counsel and can’t find one because they’re afraid to defend a person who represents what half the country thinks an unpopular cause?”
While left-wing violence has grown less prevalent than it was last summer, the problem has by no means gone away.
Fox News reported that Tacoma, Washington was rocked by anti-police rioting late last month.
