The world was shocked to hear Wednesday that conservative talk radio icon Rush Limbaugh had died following a year-long battle with lung cancer. He was 70.
According to the Washington Examiner, fellow radio host Mark Levin called into Fox News on Wednesday to pay tribute to Limbaugh’s life and legacy, calling his late friend a “tremendous patriot” in a heartwrenching talk with Fox’s Harris Faulkner.
The loss of a patriot
Levin and Limbaugh were reportedly friends for 25 years. On Wednesday, Levin said the conservative icon loved his audience and his country.
“We lost a tremendous patriot,” Levin told Faulkner, according to Fox News. “I want your audience to know how much he profoundly loved them… If you thought somebody needed help, he would help them. Nothing like what the liberal media has tried to do to him.”
Limbaugh began his radio career back in 1988, the Examiner reported.
“I just want him to be remembered the way he should be remembered,” Levin said of the radio host, “a tremendous patriot of this country who refused to accept the attacks that came against this country from within.”
Levin went on:
[Limbaugh] refused to accept the ideological changes in this country. He defended the traditions of this country, and he spoke for tens of millions of us and, you know, I’ve met a lot of smart people in my life, dealt with a lot of smart people, never smarter than Rush, never wiser, and never kinder.
“A tremendously sad day”
Later in his talk with Faulkner, Levin said “this is a tremendously sad day for those who love this country and…for those who salute the flag, who embrace the military and law enforcement.”
“It’s a tremendously sad day because we’ve lost Thomas Paine,” he added. “We’ve lost a voice like no other and likely will never be again.”
Levin said it’s especially tragic to lose Limbaugh “at a time when we need a voice like his.”
“He fought to the bitter end,” Levin said of his longtime friend.
It’s hard to argue that Rush Limbaugh didn’t have a profound impact on the nation — and Limbaugh’s estimated 43 million listeners are no doubt mourning the loss of such a beloved conservative icon. He will be greatly missed.
