Biden AG pick promises to prosecute Capitol rioters, white supremacists

Confirmation hearings began this week in the Senate for President Joe Biden’s pick for attorney general, Merrick Garland — and already, Democrats have found reason for celebration.

According to Breitbart, Garland vowed in his opening statement that if confirmed, he’ll be swift to prosecute those behind the deadly Jan. 6 attack on Capitol Hill.

“If confirmed, I will supervise the prosecution of white supremacists and others who stormed the Capitol on January 6 — a heinous attack that sought to disrupt a cornerstone of our democracy: the peaceful transfer of power to a newly elected government,” the current federal judge said, according to Breitbart.

“Equal justice”

Of course, that wasn’t the only mention of the hot-button issue of racial injustice during Garland’s opening talk. According to The Washington Times, the 68-year-old vowed to stand for equal justice under the law as attorney general and said political forces wouldn’t sway him in his pursuit of that mission.

“The mission remains urgent because we do not yet have equal justice,” Garland said. “Communities of color and other minorities still face discrimination in housing, education, employment, and the criminal justice system.”

Asked later by New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker (D) about his “motivation” for “confronting hate and discrimination in American history,” Garland gave an emotional response.

“My grandparents fled anti-Semitism and persecution,” Garland said, according to Fox News.

“The country took us in and protected us,” he added of America. “And so I want very much want to be the kind of attorney general that you’re saying I could become. I’ll do my best to be that kind of attorney general.”

Missing the big picture?

Fox and other outlets have reported that Garland is expected to skate through his confirmation hearings with little pushback. Even Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has expressed his support for the judge.

“I think you’re a very good pick for this job,” Graham reportedly said of Garland, even as he was brutally questioning the nominee.

But while Biden’s AG pick may be basking in the praise after promising to bring accountability to the perpetrators of January’s deadly riot at the Capitol, he’s been oddly quiet about the violence that transpired across America last summer as anti-police protesters took to the streets.

Fox Business revealed in September that the unrest likely cost billions of dollars in damages, and reports indicated the violence resulted in over two dozen deaths. If Garland really wants to preach about equality under the law, those responsible for the summer of destruction ought to be in his crosshairs, too.
