An official at an asylum center was stabbed to death by a Sudanese immigrant, in an attack that has reverberated through France, Breitbart reported.
The horrifying killing unfolded after the perpetrator learned he would be deported back to his home country.
Immigrant denied asylum before stabbing
The murder occurred in the city of Pau on Friday around 11 a.m., at an immigration center. The 46-year old victim ran the asylum service there. He was stabbed three times, once in the throat.
The 38-year old alleged killer had just learned that he lost his asylum bid over a violent criminal history. He was facing deportation, but his removal was not timely enough to stop the horrific crime, which was announced by French Interior Minister Gerald Darmamin.
“I will go to Pau at the end of the afternoon to meet the staff of the association as well as the elected officials following the dramatic assault this morning. I extend my sincere condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones,” he said.
France has been the site of shocking Islamist terror attacks and stabbings over the years that have shaped the country’s politics. But this stabbing was not related to terrorism, according to the prosecutor, who said the assailant was detained by staff at the center.
“Two employees of the center intervened, with a lot of courage. They held him by the arms and locked him in an office. He put up no resistance,” she said.
Shocking attack rattles France
The right-wing National Rally party called the attack a consequence of a permissive attitude on immigration and called for all immigration to stop.
“The unlimited and indiscriminate reception of migrants leads to unprecedented violence,” National Rally member Nicolas Meizonnet tweeted, adding “we must swiftly suspend the reception of all migrants, this naivety has lasted far too long!”
The Pau attack comes less than a year after a 20-year old Afghan migrant beat a 63-year old pro-immigration activist to death.
Pau’s mayor François Bayrou lamented the “tragedy, all the more appalling because the victim has committed himself all his professional life to the defence of migrants and those who apply for asylum.”
The assailant arrived in France in 2015 and was not accepted as a refugee, but was allowed to stay until 2017, when his status was revoked for knife crime.
