Emily Mitchell, who built a loyal following as a social media influencer and parenting blogger, was expecting her fifth child when she died last month at the age of 36.
The tragic news was confirmed by her family in a heartbreaking post to an online fundraising website. Mitchell reportedly died suddenly on Dec. 22 while pregnant with her unborn child, Joey.
“Having her morning coffee and toast”
According to the GoFundMe announcement, she was “having her morning coffee and toast when she suddenly became unresponsive.” A suspected cause of death was not included in the family statement.
“Our dear Emily and her precious unborn baby left us unexpectedly in the morning of December 22, 2020,” the post confirmed. In addition to her husband, Joe, and their children, Finn, Isla, Eden, and Luna, she is survived by her parents, three siblings, in-laws, and several nieces and nephews.
Her family expressed grief over the sudden absence of her “joyful presence,” asserting that she “made a big impact in so many people’s lives, and this loss is incomprehensible for anyone who knew her.”
Mitchell “was a dedicated mom and wife, she had a heart for the Lord, and loved her children so dearly,” her loved ones concluded.
The Rhode Island resident had amassed a large online following as she blogged about homeschooling her four children. In the weeks before her death, she shared the news of her latest pregnancy.
“Devoted wife and incredible mother”
In what would be her final post, she announced that she was set to undergo her fifth Caesarean section. While natural births are popular among the homeschooling community, she urged those who need medical intervention in the process to avoid feeling discouraged.
“However your baby gets here, just know YOUR EXPERIENCE is valid and worthy,” Mitchell wrote.
Her obituary remembered her as a “devoted wife and incredible mother” of “deep faith” who had an “infectious smile and a kind, compassionate spirit.”
Mitchell was also a “talented musician, singer, recording artist, and music teacher” who held degrees in music and psychology, the obituary continued.
When the fundraiser quickly surpassed its $100,000 goal, her loved ones updated the post with a message of gratitude, writing: “Her family was surprised by the outpouring of love from her homeschool community on Instagram. Together we went above and beyond to support them, and even though this will not take away their pain, we know this gift means a lot to them. Thank you, always.”
