Secretary of State Michael Pompeo recently participated in an interview for Bloomberg Television’s “The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations,” where he talked about the future of America’s foreign policy.
Newsmax reports that Pompeo pointed to China, North Korea, and Iran as key areas of concern in terms of foreign policy considerations going forward.
“The regret”
In terms of China and North Korea, Pompeo said that President Donald Trump got the ball rolling in the right direction.
According to Pompeo, the president’s hard-nose approach to China, particularly in the area of trade, is correct. Similarly, trying to get North Korea to give up its nuclear arsenal is also correct. The problem, however, Pompeo said is that there is still a lot of work to be done in both of these areas.
“The regret is that the big issues, the hard issues and the trade relationship between the United States and China have not been resolved,” Pompeo said. He noted two problems in particular with regard to China, that trade is still unfairly in China’s favor and that intellectual property theft still remains a problem.
And, in terms of North Korea, Pompeo pointed out that Kim Jong Un “has not yet made the decision that he is actually prepared to execute,” in terms of giving up his nuclear arsenal.
The worry, of course, is that a Joe Biden administration could ruin the progress made in both of these areas when what is needed is for America’s leadership to keep the foot on the gas.
Iran
There is a similar concern with regard to Iran, according to Pompeo. “As they now think they may have a president coming in office who will do a deal again, they’re going to raise their level of activity to threaten and so that the Europeans and the United States will once again kowtow,” Pompeo explained.
Biden has indeed made it known that he intends to reenter the Iran Deal that was the legacy of former President Barrack Obama.
President Trump exited the deal because it didn’t do what it was supposed to do – namely to keep Iran from becoming dangerous through the creation of weapons, including nuclear ones – and because it was bad for America economically. President Trump has chosen instead to place harsh economic sanctions on Iran, which have been more effective than the Iran Deal.
Pompeo’s future
There is some talk about Pompeo being a presidential candidate in 2024, but Pompeo hasn’t really hinted at anything. Instead, he has said that he wants to return to Kansas and to help cement the legacy of Trump’s administration.
“I want to make sure and tell the story that the Trump administration did, so I’ll find a way to do that,” Pompeo said.
