While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) might be a proud mother and grandmother, her own rules would ban such gendered language in certain capacities on the House floor.
Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer was one of the many critics who called her out over the ban on such potentially divisive terms when he discovered that she had used them on her own social media account.
“Flagging for the woke leftists”
According to the Washington Examiner, Pelosi’s Twitter bio includes language that appears to contradict the new rules passed in the lower chamber of Congress.
“Flagging for the woke leftists,” he declared in a tweet on Monday. “[Pelosi’s] twitter bio is in violation of her new House rules against using gender specific terms.”
Spicer included a screenshot of the speaker’s handle, complete with a circle around her self-description as a “mother” and “grandmother.”

As the Miami Herald explained, Pelosi’s new rules call for gender-neutral terms like parent, child, or sibling to be used in place of the more descriptive and accurate gendered words in certain types of official House communications.
“This is stupid”
In fact, the ban goes beyond familial descriptors to include replacing terms like “chairman” and “seaman” with “chair” and “seafarer,” respectively.
Even the phrase “submit his or her resignation” has now been banned, replaced with the simple term “resign.”
The rules passed on Monday, the day after she received enough support to secure another term as speaker. In a 217-206 vote, lawmakers approved her push to “honor all gender identities by changing pronouns and familial relationships in the House rules to be gender neutral.”
Spicer was not alone in expressing his opposition to such regulation of speech. Her GOP counterpart, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), reacted with a tweet, declaring: “This is stupid. Signed, – A father, son, and brother.”
At least one prominent member of her own party, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), called it the “height of hypocrisy for people who claim to be the champions of rights for women to deny the very biological existence of women.”
