Kamala Harris is being accused of plagiarizing a Civil Rights hero in a shameless attempt to demonstrate that her “woke” sensibilities started in childhood.
The Democrat has faced mockery and criticism after social media users noticed that a fanciful story she told in October is markedly similar to one told by Martin Luther King Jr.
In a breathless puff piece glamorizing her supposedly precocious commitment to civil rights, Harris recounted going to a Civil Rights march with her parents as a toddler to Elle magazine.
“My mother tells the story about how I’m fussing, and she’s like, ‘Baby, what do you want? What do you need?’ And I just looked at her and I said, ‘Fweedom,’” Harris said.
Similarity to MLK story
After the interview resurfaced, Twitter users noticed that Harris’s story sounded nearly identical to an anecdote that King shared with Playboy magazine in 1965.
“I will never forget a moment in Birmingham when a White policeman accosted a little Negro girl, seven or eight years old, who was walking in a demonstration with her mother,” King said. “‘What do you want?’ the policeman asked her gruffly, and the little girl looked at him straight in the eye and answered, ‘Fee-dom.’ She couldn’t even pronounce it, but she knew.”
Harris told the story multiple times
Harris has repeatedly shared the story, including in her 2010 book “Smart on Crime” and her 2019 book “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey,” according to media reports. “My mother used to laugh when she told the story about a time I was fussing as a toddler: She leaned down to me and asked, ‘Kamala, what’s wrong? What do you want?’ And I wailed back, ‘Fweedom,'” she said in 2010.
To critics, the incident is further evidence of a cynical phony. It evokes Harris’s “that little girl was me” moment during her failed presidential campaign, when she was criticized for telling an on-the-nose story to accuse Joe Biden of being a racist.
Conservative activist Candace Owens mocked Harris in a tweet Monday:
I’ve never shared this story but my mother tells me that when I was two years of age, I looked up to her and my father with bright eyes and uttered my first full sentence:
“Fwee at last, fwee at last, thank God almighty, we’re fwee at last”.
Thus, #BLEXIT was born. #Fweedom

Biden, ironically, abandoned his first presidential campaign in 1987 over a plagiarism scandal, and critics have said that the two seem to be birds of a feather.
“Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are two plagiarizing frauds. Biden plagiarized during law school and from RFK, Hubert Humphrey, JFK, and he stole the family history of a British politician [Neil Kinnock],” GOP rapid response director Steve Guest wrote. “Now Kamala Harris plagiarized from MLK.”
